ITIL® (Version 5) – The next evolutionary step for modern service and product management

The digital world is evolving rapidly—faster, more connected, and smarter than ever before. Artificial intelligence, automation, agile working methods, and product-centric organizations are shaping the everyday life of modern companies today. This is exactly where ITIL® (Version 5) comes in.

ITIL® (Version 5) is not a radical departure from the tried and tested, but rather a logical further development of the globally established framework. The aim is to provide practical support to organizations in creating value, managing change safely, and using digital innovation responsibly.

Why a new ITIL® version—and why now?

Previous ITIL® versions were heavily focused on traditional service management. Today, however, the boundaries between products, services, platforms, and digital ecosystems are becoming blurred. Companies need to respond more quickly, act more flexibly, and deliver measurable added value at the same time.

ITIL® (Version 5) was developed precisely for this reality:

  • Digital-first & product-centric
Modern organizations manage integrated products and services—ITIL® (Version 5) explicitly reflects this reality for the first time.
  • AI and automation-ready
The framework is designed to be "AI-native" and supports the use of AI, automation, DevOps, and agile methods right from the start.
  • Focus on agility and results
Instead of rigid processes, the focus is on adaptability, speed, and real business outcomes.

  • ITIL® (Version 5) strengthens the connection between people, practices, and technology—for sustainable, measurable results.

Evolution instead of disruption: Why "ITIL® (Version 5)"?

The designation ITIL® (Version 5) deliberately emphasizes the evolutionary nature of the framework. Existing knowledge, experience, and investments from ITIL® v3 and ITIL® 4 remain relevant. At the same time, the naming follows a consistent logic within the PeopleCert portfolio (e.g., PRINCE2 Agile Version 2).

What's new in ITIL® (Version 5)?

ITIL® (Version 5) brings noticeable improvements in terms of content:

  • More dynamic service taxonomy
Clearer, more flexible models that better reflect real operating models.

  • developed by KI-nativ Support for intelligent workflows, automation, and data-driven decisions.
  • Integration of products and services
Holistic management in digital environments—no longer just service-centered.
  • Greater focus on experience-
More transparency, better collaboration, and a holistic view of all stakeholders.

  • backward compatibility Existing ITIL® qualifications and investments retain their value.

The ITIL® (version 5) certification scheme at a glance

The qualification path starts with ITIL® Foundation (Version 5) and leads through three specialization tracks to the highest distinction, ITIL® Master:

The three specializations

  • ITIL® Practice Manager (PM)
  • ITIL® Managing Professional (MP)
  • ITIL® Strategic Leader (SL)

Those who achieve all three designations receive the title ITIL® Master —proof of in-depth expertise and strategic decision-making skills.

ITIL® Practice Manager – practical and modular

After completing the foundation course, participants choose a specialization:

  • Monitor, Support & Fulfil
  • Plan, Implement & Control
  • Collaborate, Assure &Improve

In addition, the ITIL® Transformation module is mandatory.

ITIL® Transformation – the connecting element

ITIL® Transformation is a core module in all qualification paths. It teaches the ability to plan, implement, and sustainably embed change holistically —from the service value chain to company-wide digital initiatives.
The module only needs to be completed once and applies to all designations.

AI governance – responsible use of AI

New in ITIL® (Version 5) is the AI Governance extension module. It addresses the growing importance of:

  • ethical use of AI
  • Transparency and traceability
  • Risk management and compliance

This makes ITIL® an important framework for organizations that want to integrate AI responsibly into their service and product landscapes.

ITIL® 4 exams, training, and transition

  • ITIL® Foundation & Practices: Closed-book multiple-choice
  • Higher modules: Open-book exams
  • ITIL® 4 remains valid and will continue to be supported for at least 12 months.
  • Existing ITIL® 4 certifications retain their value and can be expanded in a targeted manner.

Conclusion: ITIL® (Version 5) – ready for the digital future

ITIL® (Version 5) combines proven best practices with the requirements of an AI-driven, agile, and product-oriented world. It provides organizations and professionals with a clear, practical framework for creating value, actively shaping transformation, and achieving sustainable success.
